How to Compare Digital Zoom Cameras

If you're looking for digital zoom cameras, it pays to do your research before purchasing one. Not all cameras are created equal, and by understanding the different various features that some of them offer, you can make an educated and informed purchase. If you compare digital zoom cameras, you'll see that they vary widely when it comes to elements like zoom distances, megapixels and more. Let's take a look at these features in more depth.

Digital zoom is an important feature, of course. Many people confuse optical zoom and digital zoom, and it certainly is easy to do. However there are some differences. Optical zoom actually utilizes the lens to bring your photography subject closer. But with digital zoom, the part of the image you've captured is simply enlarged. Because this is not done via the lens, you may find that digital zoom takes away from image quality, especially with a lower quality camera.

Another way to compare digital zoom cameras is to check the megapixel level. The lower grade cameras start at around 3 megapixels. Digital SLR or single lens reflex cameras often start at around 6 megapixels and go up from there. The more megapixels a camera has, the better the image quality is going to be. So as a rule of thumb, try to choose a camera with as many megapixels as you can afford.

Many digital zoom cameras also come with other features as well. One is the LCD screen, where you can view your photos before deciding what to do with them. The average size LCD screen is 2.5 inches, however there are smaller and larger ones. Also, some cameras come with a variety of photographic modes that let you enhance your photographing experience and change the look of your pictures.

Another fantastic feature that some digital zoom cameras have is movie mode. This allows you to actually shoot home movies with your camera! Some cameras offer this and some don't, so if it's a feature you want, do some comparison shopping.
